 Holy Spirit Move in Dhofar! Today, let us pray for the release of the Holy Spirit over Dhofar. At Pentecost, God poured out the promised Holy Spirit, empowering the early church and drawing many to believe. Peter said in Acts 2:17-21, “What you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they will prophesy. And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below—blood and fire and clouds of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ We want to see this, so that people in Dhofar will call on the name of the Lord and be saved!

 Al-Mazyunah Desert Border Al-Mazyunah (Arabic: المزيونة, pop. 5,508) is a town and seat of Al-Mazyunah District (pop. 8,399) in the Dhofar Region. It is located inland at the southwestern border of Oman, neighboring Yemen. There is a border crossing here, and a recently established Free Trade Zone, to spur economic growth. It is located on the edge of the Empty Quarter Desert. In Arabic, the root of Al-Mazyunah can be translated as praise, light of one’s face, or a cloud with water. “Restore us, Lord, God of Armies; make Your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.” (Psalm 80:19) God, shine the light of Your face upon the people of Al-Mazyunah, that they may be saved!  Dhalkut Beaches and Baobab Trees Dhalkut (Arabic: ضلكوت, pop. 1.157) is a town and seat of Dhalkut District (pop. 3.179) in the Dhofar Region. It is located on the coast at the southwestern border of Oman, neighboring Yemen, with a border crossing. Situated on the coast at the foot of the Al-Qamar mountains, the road there is through the mountains and is full of hairpin turns and steep slopes. The beaches in this area are pristine, some of the most beautiful on the Arabian Sea. Two interesting sights are a giant baobab tree, named Hiroum Dheeri (the Tree from Far Away), and a military helicopter wreck half-buried in the beach sand, with numerous stories about its origins. “He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—He remains faithful forever.” (Psalm 146:6) We bless the people of Dhalkut to know their Creator’s faithfulness!  Mirbat Stallions and Strategic Battles Mirbat (Arabic: مرباط, pop. 9,886) is a town and seat of Mirbat District (pop. 16,364) in the Dhofar Region. It is located on the coast, east of Salalah. The area is marked by pristine beaches, rugged mountains, and caves and sinkholes for exploring. There also is a wealth of birds and marine life. The entrance to Mirbat is marked with two miniature statues of prancing brown horses, one on each side of the road. These horses are a whimsical memorial to the history of the town as an important breeding center for Arabian steeds in the 9th Century. Mirbat also was an important port in the ancient frankincense trade. During the Dhofar rebellion (1963-1976), Mirbat was the site of the 1972 battle between Communist guerrillas on one side and the armed forces of the Sultan of Oman and their British Special Air Service advisers on the other, who were greatly outnumbered. The guerillas nearly overran the British and Omani forces, but ultimately were pushed back and defeated, turning the tide of the war. In Arabic, the root of Mirbat can be translated as “to tie, connect, join, bind.” “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19) We bless the people of Mirbat to be loosed from their chains and to be bound to Jesus! 種馬與戰略戰役

 Dhofar Seekers All Who Are Hungry We know that the Father is actively at work in Oman, to begin drawing people to His Son, Jesus. Researchers estimate that approximately 2.5% of any given population are open for religious change. So in Dhofar region, that means approximately 10,828 people are potentially open! ‘Broad sowing’ initiatives are challenging in Oman, because of laws outlawing proselytization. However, social media campaigns are starting to connect with seekers and beginning to bear fruit. Today, let’s pray for seekers in Dhofar region, and the social media efforts to reach them.

 Muqshin Desert Oasis Muqshin (Arabic: مقشن, pop. 581) is a town and seat of Muqshin District (pop. 627) in the Dhofar Region. It is located in the desert, on the border with Al-Wusta region. Muqshin is very sparsely populated. Outside of the main town, there are only 4 tiny villages of less than 50 people: Ramlat Muqshin, al Mushash, Mandar al Dhibyan, and Marsawdad. Muqshin is a true desert oasis: an area of extensive sand dunes, a permanent water source, and the only area in Dhofar to where date palms are naturally found. It also has a ‘ghaf’ tree woodland, a desert tree that thrives in arid conditions and provides shelter to the animals (such as hare and fox) who live here. “But He also can turn a barren wilderness into an oasis with water! He can make springs flow into desert lands and turn them into fertile valleys so that cities spring up, and He gives it all to those who are hungry.” (Psalm 107:35-36 TPT) We bless the people of Muqshin to be hungry for the God who makes the Oasis! 沙漠綠洲

 Rakhyut Moon Town Rakhyut (Arabic: رخيوت, pop. 706) is a small town and seat of Rakhyut District (pop. 4,985) in the Dhofar Region. It is located on the coast west of Salalah. Similar to other coastal towns in the area, it is marked by beautiful white sand beaches with a backdrop of dramatic mountains. The area sees much tourism during the ‘khareef’ season, and hosts a festival in the ‘serb’ season, following the khareef. In ancient times Rakhyut played an important role in the frankincense trade, and still has a fort from times of skirmishes with the Mahra tribes.  Sadah Guarding the Ancient Trade Sadah (Arabic: سدح, pop. 2,165) is a town and seat of Sadah District (pop. 6,016) in the Dhofar Region. It is located on the coast northeast of Salalah, at the eastern edge of the historical frankincense trade. Its fort has stood for centuries as the easternmost fortification along the Dhofar coast, guarding the precious riches and cargo of the ancient trade routes.  Shalim and the Hallaniyat Islands Famous Fishing Shalim and the Hallaniyat Islands (Arabic: شليم وجزر الحلانيات, pop. 6,339) is a district in the Dhofar Region. It is located on the coast east of Salalah, on the border with Al-Wusta Region. Shalim, located on the mainland, is the largest town and district seat (pop. 2,031). The Hallaniyat Islands are a group of 5 islands about 25 miles (40 km) off the coast, historically known as the Khuriya Muriya Islands. Hallaniya is the largest and most populated of the islands. The islands are famous for their bird life and rich marine life, and are one of the best spots in the world for saltwater fly fishing, especially for Giant Trevally fish. Fishing tourism is a growing industry for the area. The islands were known to the ancient Greeks, appearing on Ptolemy’s maps as the Zenibou Islands. In 1854, Sultan Said gave the islands to the British, who made them a part of the Aden (Yemen) colony. They remained a British possession until 1967, when they were returned back to Oman. Yemen wanted to retain control of the islands, and the dispute was finally settled in 1992. "Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them… Let them give glory to the Lord and proclaim His praise in the islands."  Taqah Wadis, Forts, and Cemeteries Taqah (Arabic: طاقة, pop. 12,538) is a town and seat of Taqah District (pop. 21,487) in the Dhofar Region. It is located on the coast just east of Salalah, and is a popular tourist destination. Wadi Darbat draws thousands of visitors during Khareef, when the waterfalls and rivers are flowing amongst lush green foliage. Taqah Castle is one of the better restored forts in the Sultanate, and Khor Rori/Sumharam archeological park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Taqah also has a cemetery where Sultan Qaboos’ mother Mayzuna is buried, as well as his uncle and grandfather. In Arabic, Taqah means energy, power, or capacity. “I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe in Him.  Sumharam Frankincense, Sin, and Witchcraft Sumharam (Arabic: سمهرم) is an ancient town and trading post located on a coastal estuary called Khor Rori, near Taqah. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the UNESCO Frankincense Trail. Legend has it that this was the biblical Queen of Sheba’s summer palace, but archaeological evidence places it about 700 years after her reign. Nevertheless, it was an important city and fortified port in the lucrative frankincense trade, and thrived from approximately 300 BC-500 AD. To the Ancient Greeks, Sumharam was known as Moscha Limen (‘Harbor of the Young Shoots,’ probably referring to the mangrove trees that were found there) and Abyssapolis, (‘City of the Abyss,’ referring to the deep abyss at nearby Wadi Darbat). Besides dwellings, markets, and fortifications, the complex has a large temple of the Mesopotamian moon god, Sin. A popular tourist destination by day, at night it can be a site of witchcraft by locals. A group of us recently prayed and worshiped on-site here, and took communion in the temple ruins. “And also carefully guard yourselves so that you don’t look up into the skies and see the sun and moon and stars, all the constellations of the skies, and be seduced into worshiping and serving them. God set them out for everybody’s benefit, everywhere.  Thumrait Trees, Tombs, and Bases Thumrait (Arabic: ثمريت, pop. 10, 552) is a town and seat of Thumrait District (pop. 17,113) in the Dhofar Region. It is located beyond the mountains north of Salalah, and is the last stop before entering the vast desert to drive northward. In ancient times, Thumrait was an important point on the caravan trade routes, and frankincense trees used to grow in great abundance here. Wadi Dawkah, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a frankincense tree ‘forest’ is on the road from Salalah to Thumrait. Thumrait is also known for having a Muslim shrine of Prophet Job’s tomb (one of several located throughout the Middle East). Thumrait is also home to an important Royal Air Force of Oman base, which also has been used by British and American forces since 1981, particularly in the first and second Gulf Wars, as well as the war in Afghanistan. Thumrait was under ancient Persian/Sassanid rule for decades, and only came under Omani rule in the 18th century. The name ‘Thumrait’ may be Persian, meaning ‘fertility.’ “How joyful are those who fear the Lord—all who follow his ways! You will enjoy the fruit of your labor. How joyful and prosperous you will be! Your wife will be like a fruitful grapevine, flourishing within your home. Your children will be like vigorous young olive trees as they sit around your table.  Job's Tomb Nabbi Ayyub One of the most popular tourist sights in Dhofar is Job’s Tomb, located in the mountains near Thumrait, about 30 km (18.6 miles) outside of Salalah. It is a Muslim shrine to ‘Nabbi Ayyub’ (Prophet Job in Arabic), but people from all faiths come to visit. Although several other Middle Eastern nations also claim Job’s burial ground, some scholars believe southeast Arabia (i.e., Oman) fits with the biblical record. The tomb is housed in a simple domed building next to a mosque. It is 4 meters (13 feet) long, and some suspect a second person may be buried in the tomb. Near the entrance of the tomb is what some say is the footprint of Job in the stone. There also is a nearby spring, which according to the Quranic account, Job prayed for and God miraculously made the water flow. Although Job suffered incredible loss and misfortune, he did not doubt God, and God rewarded him in the end. Today, let us pray for the believers in Oman who are suffering. At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. Let’s pray to the Lord of the Harvest, to open doors and keep them open, to thrust out and retain laborers, and to reap much fruit!
